Edwin van Beek

Professor Edwin van Beek graduated from Erasmus Medical School, Rotterdam, in 1987 and trained in Radiology and completed his PhD in Amsterdam before moving to the UK, where he earned an MEd from the University of Sheffield. He has held senior academic and clinical roles in the UK and USA, including as Professor of Radiology, Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa, where he developed services in Cardiac CT Angiography and hyperpolarized gas lung MRI.

Since 2009, he has been based in the UK, focusing on quantitative imaging in cardiovascular, chest, and PET imaging, with research interests spanning lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and disease quantification. He serves on imaging biomarker alliances for the ESR, NCRI, and RSNA, and is actively involved in cardiac multimodality and lung imaging research, including Scotland’s lung cancer screening programme.

A Fellow of ISMRM, the Royal College of Radiologists, and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Professor van Beek has published over 530 peer-reviewed papers, three books, and more than 50 book chapters. He has also served on numerous international committees, editorial boards, and professional societies, including the Fleischner Society and the ISMRM, where he was honoured as a Fellow in 2019.
